I was outstandingly upset to see that SMSRealm had closed, and all the users here shrugging off Sunshine as if it's a normal thing to do.
I've been putting tons of effort into writing hacks for Super Mario Sunshine just to see the community reject the game. I don't mind being a lone wolf, but I just want to know why only the minority pays this game any mind when it comes to mods. Is it not interesting? Is it too complicated? And lastly, is there any Super Mario Sunshine hacking community that is still alive? |

Because it is.
SMSRealm had no real progress on it for the longest time, very few posts were being made, many users were inactive (even the owner), it's a 3D game so there's a huge entry barrier so only a select few elites could hack it, among other reasons.
Was there ever one? |

I'm not sure of the standards that are set in this situation, but I'd certainly say 3000+ posts on a forum discussing hacking of a game isn't a failure.
I honestly don't understand how a game can be neglected like this when other Mario titles are praised and treated with a huge community of tools and hacks. I know I'm not the only one who believes Super Mario Sunshine deserves more attention. I know it's all a matter of opinion on what games you choose to put your time and effort into and all that, but this is mine, and I'd be delighted to be a member of a community that chooses to focus effort into Sunshine. |

Most of the posts were made in only the first 1 or 2 months though.
The 2D games are honestly the ones that get the most. SMG hacking is dead, SM64DS hacking is hanging on by a single strand, and SM64 is rather small. We can't expect a Gamecube game to fair any better than SM64 - anything that isn't curved and detailed and high-quality is automatically going to look like crap. The standards are going to be too high and the entry barrier too steep to have an even slightly realistic future. |

Posted by NormalEvan Super Mario Sunshine, although still a top-ranked game in my book, was just that awkward transitional Mario game. Lets face it, F.L.U.D.D. never really caught on. Posted by MercuryPenny It literally is hanging on by a single thread. ____________________ NNID: GreenThunder1337 3DS FC: 1521 - 5979 - 1511 |

I find this whole barrier thing bullshit. Regarding to mario 64, its just as hard to make a 120 star hack for mario 64 as it is for mario sunshine or any other 3d game.
The problem lies at people thinking that there should be a community, and that the core should be a tool or a certain hack. That is just plain wrong and I don't know when this developed but this going on quite some time now in all kind of "Communities". first, I see only people whining about communities not being large enough or something, but that shouldn't really do anything. If you want to hack a game, you should do it even if there is no community or some bullshit like that. second, The core doesn't lie at a tool or hack or board. The core lies with the people who start hacking the game because of technical details. They are the people who make the "easy" tools. so if you want a community or a hack going on, you should have someone who is able to do such stuff. regarding to mario sunshine, there are enough ways to make a simple hack for this game, so community or not, you should be able to make something. tl;dr: stop whining about fucking communities and just do shit if you want something to happen. (This should not be taken to personal) |

The issue with 3D games past SM64 is model quality, too.
In SM64, all the graphics are simple, so anyone can throw together some shit in SketchUp and have it look decent ingame. SMS and SMG up the model quality significantly, and if you try putting SM64 graphics in those games, it looks like shit. See how detailed SMG's models are for example. There aren't many modelers able to reach that visual quality, and most of them get hired by game studios or otherwise want to be paid for their hard work. Then again, looking at it from a modelling perspective may be wrong. In the case of SMG, one could still do many cool things with only the original models. And that's the direction SMG2.5 should have taken instead of 'omg we need 49 full custom galaxies'. ____________________ NSMBHD - Kafuka - Jul melonDS the most fruity DS emulator there is zafkflzdasd |

Posted by StapleButter I think you should take that back https://i.imgur.com/XrZeUGg.png https://i.imgur.com/GrwN92C.png https://i.imgur.com/cOjBOyk.jpg https://i.imgur.com/9HdobuP.png http://img4.hostingpics.net/pics/439532tttw.png http://img4.hostingpics.net/pics/185350ttt.png http://i59.tinypic.com/2dc7huf.png unless you think they look good, but it takes a while and effort to make something proper like this https://i.imgur.com/xILyN1E.png , https://i.imgur.com/GJXYEmi.png (Both made by the same guy). One thing mario 64 hacking does have is a proper level importer. > export model to obj > select model and click on import > playable already where mario galaxy needs a whole process for each model. |

Posted by Jesse You're absolutely right. That's my opinion on the subject, too. The only problem is, it's difficult to learn how to do things if there's no one to ask. How can I pool knowledge if there's no one to pool it from? I've been teaching myself for a few months now when it comes to Super Mario Sunshine hacking, and I've gotten a very long way, but there are some times when I just get stuck, and don't know where to start. I reach that point where I go looking for someone to ask for help, only to find that there is no one to ask. I'm going to be releasing some of the smaller creations of mine in order to hopefully attempt to spark some interest in this subject again. I've put far too much work into this to just have it stomped on by people considering this and that "dead". Posted by StapleButter Modelling is hard. Just because there's a lower standard doesn't mean it's not still difficult and time-consuming to do. |

Sure, anyone can do any hacking they want with Super Mario Sunshine, it's just that there isn't a SMS hacking community. Amazing things can be pulled off in SMS hacking due to the entry barrier but like others have said in this thread, it's due to the entry barrier that SMS hacking is dead.
It will probably remain that way unless 20-30 expert modelers who are also hackers get together. With so few people, such a scene cannot exist for more than 1-2 months, ____________________ Super Mario LOLand Thanks to kaj for helping to port my Acmlmboard 2.5 layout to Acmlmboard 2.064! |

Posted by Jesse I said 'can'. Of course, it's also possible to make it look like shit. You people damn well get my point. Modelling is by no means easy, but the standard is lower if you consider SM64 than SMS or SMG. Posted by MercuryPenny This. Especially when said hack is SMG2.5. "oh hey let's make tons of epic shit" and never gets anywhere. I remember that I posted about SMG2.5 on modelling forums back then, and absolutely noone cared-- the only feedback I ever got was unrelated moderation shit. ____________________ NSMBHD - Kafuka - Jul melonDS the most fruity DS emulator there is zafkflzdasd |

Most of it is my lack of motivation to do stuff because I have a busy real life and all that.
I gave it to somebody else while I still have control over the board and server, he'll just do most of the help with the scene. The board's open again, so feel free to contribute whatever you want to. I won't be around that much, but I'll still be of assistance. (The other reason I closed it was to see who can actually control the board itself because I had a lot of tests during that time and didn't want lasdjfalsdfjalsdfj happening to it in the meantime. ____________________ a |

Yeah, don't let the fact that there isn't a community stop you from doing something awesome that you can feel accomplished about. ____________________ NNID: GreenThunder1337 3DS FC: 1521 - 5979 - 1511 |

Hi everyone, I haven't posted for a while now, but...
Well anyway. I can see your guys point The community strengthens peoples motivation, but its not to say they cant go off on their own. Good models do take time, a lot of time. I consider that to be one of the biggest entry barriers into hacking (even though you don't need to model anything to make a good hack). Because if you want custom models that look good, you either need to spend time learning or getting someone else to help you. ____________________ Remember, every user has to start out somewhere,- Every time I look back at my old posts, I cringe. |
