So yesterday I picked up Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, and it's pretty fun.
It's faster than Dream Team, it throws out the boring tutorials, it even hands you a bunch of stuff you normally would've gotten post-second area if this was Dream Team! It's beautiful, and my only complaint is that the story sucks and there are no real PM characters. So, how did you enjoy it, if you have it? I wouldn't mind knowing! ____________________ Wanna see more of my sprites? Imo none of them had great story, it was all "evil person does evil things! chase them down and kill them, also bowser is the final boss" (in every game some form of bowser is the final boss, not sure about paper jam but strongly doubt there's someone else) ____________________ Switch on latest firm happily playing Smash daily PC with an i7-4790K, RX480, 16GB ram Various other consoles that are hardly used due to emulation existing |

Posted by NoThisIsStupider Okay, story doesn't just mean overarching narrative. It includes everything that occurs as you go through the game, the driving force behind you doing whatever you are doing in whatever area you're in. For example, the original Paper Mario has an overarching plot of "Bowser has stolen a bunch of power, now you need to go beat him up so you can save the princess." Technically that's an accurate description. But there's so much other stuff that happens in the story, whether it be the shenanigans in Koopa Bros. Fortress, or needing to prove your innocence of a murder in Shiver City. There is a lot of zany stuff that you get up that doesn't happen in the main series games to so people don't mind if the overall plot is a bit cookie-cutter. Paper Jam, from what I've seen, doesn't have all this "unrelated to the plot but still really wacky" stuff. |

Story is lacklustre, gameplay is lacking variety, there's no pacing, not a single unique character, no decent sidequests, and only about half the content as any other M&L game, they just added a bunch of filler "catch the Paper Toads" segments to stretch out the game's length. It was clearly rushed and low-budget.
Still had a blast though. |

I've just discovered something really annoying in Paper Jam. Basically there's this piece of gear called the Farmers Boots, it makes enemies drop beans instead of coins. Using this, you could get every every stat up to 999. It's endgame for that reason. The problem is not the gear, no, the problem is how you get it.
First off, in the final area, you need to find a specific paper enemy, pretty much the least common enemy in the area. Next, you need to use a boo biscuit, and hope you get the 1 in 3 chance of him throwing barrels at you. Each barrel has an extremely small chance of dropping an item, and that item drop has an extremely small chance of being the farmers boots instead of a bean. I would also like to add that the enemy can throw anywhere from 2 barrels to 5, so even more luck there. I have gotten over 60 beans from this enemy, and beans are also quite a rare drop, just not as rare. I'm honestly considering hacking it in, it feels more random than the ruppee glitch from Hyrule Warriors, and that was unintentional. ____________________ Switch on latest firm happily playing Smash daily PC with an i7-4790K, RX480, 16GB ram Various other consoles that are hardly used due to emulation existing |

Yeah, the way you're supposed to get the Farmer Boots is pretty dumb, though luckily I managed to get two Boo Biscuits within 60 Boo Biscuits. They're reeeeeaaallllyyy useful, especially when you need to grind for the Boss Medley (because the Bonus Boss there is really tough).
Good luck with getting it, hope you can experience the awesomeness of kicking the butt out of Biddybuds and seeing all those beans pop out. ____________________ Wanna see more of my sprites? You get two at a time, AlphaDream must have realized how awful it was to get one, so it's the only item in the game that actually gives you two for one drop. ____________________ Switch on latest firm happily playing Smash daily PC with an i7-4790K, RX480, 16GB ram Various other consoles that are hardly used due to emulation existing |

Oh. Hmm, didn't know that (I thought I got my second one while farming a little more). Would've been nice to have been told that.

I have really liked Mario and Luigi Paper Jam! The one thing I haven't liked that much is the paper toad mini games. They can get annoying after a while. Other than that it's pretty well done! |

Paper Jam was actually a lot better than I thought. Even though there was less emphasis on "Paper" I really liked going against the Koopalings, King Boo, and King Bob-omb. The story was actually very cool as well. A lot better than Dream Team in all honesty. |

I thought the game was ok at best, personally I found the Toad Quests to get more tedious than fun and it felt pretty generic to me (i.e. no memorable locations or characters). Soundtrack is ok, I like the boss theme and the final battle theme as well but that's about it. I like how there's more rank ups but dislike the new level ups (i.e. can't choose what stat bonus to give anymore). Don't like the substitute for badges either. Story and humor was also ehhhhhh at best.
I think it is worth buying, but not something I'd find myself replaying regularly. Personally I prefer Dream Team overall. ____________________ Yo-YO, let's GO! The PSI Prodigy! (SSB4 Ness Combo Video!) |
